What’s your return policy / how do I make my return?
For USA returns/exchanges, click here for our automated portal. It’s easy: all you need is your order number from your confirmation email and the zip code associated with the delivery address. We use Happy Returns: they can print you a shipping label or you can bring the items to a dedicated Happy Bar for drop-off (including FedEx locations nationwide!).
If you're not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, and it remains in unworn condition and has not been washed or altered, it can be returned within 30 days of the original purchase date for a refund for the price of the items purchased. USA returns for refund incur a $6 shipping/processing fee per item deducted from the refund to the original form of payment. Expedited shipping, should the customer choose to pay for it, is not refunded. We reserve the right to refuse returns on items that have been worn, soiled, laundered or altered in any way. How do exchanges work?
You can process an exchange for different sizes and colorways of the same silhouette by clicking here for our automated portal. USA returns for exchange or store credit are free.
To exchange for items at different price points, or other complicating factors, reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Can I return internationally?
For international returns, the customer is responsible for return shipping costs and for the items successfully reaching our warehouse; we do not reimburse shipping, duties and taxes. For assistance with international returns, please reach out to email@example.com.
Can I return or exchange an in-store purchase online?
You definitely can! Reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance. Our usual return policies apply.

How do I make a gift exchange?

We can arrange a gift exchange that won't alert the original purchaser. Just click here to access our automated return portal. Next, you'll click the little 'gift return' button and proceed with the instructions and you'll end up receiving site credit in the form of a gift card:

How fast are your free and expedited shipping options?
Faster than a crocodile devours a flamingo (sorry, inside joke).
Our free shipping option delivers in an estimated 5-8 business days, although that timing varies based on location, and the updated estimate will display at checkout. Orders are typically processed within 1 business day (e.g., an order after business hours on Monday EST will likely make it out end of day the following day).
Faster, paid shipping options vary based on destination and shipping method. Orders where 'Fastest Shipping' or 'Extra Expedited Shipping' is purchased will go out the same business day if placed before 11:30 am EST on a business day. These fastest shipping methods tend to take 1-2 business days in total. You can find our international shipping options below, or take a look at our shipping page.
What countries do you ship to?
Nearly every country, but customs duties can be onerous depending on the destination. The good news is that the full cost for all shipping + duties + taxes is assessed at checkout so you can see the all-in price before you purchase.
There are typically two international delivery options: an inexpensive standard shipping that takes 8-14 business days and an expedited option that takes roughly 4 business days. You can find both of these options at checkout.
How long does your warehouse take to process orders?
Orders are typically processed within 1 business day, but this timing can slip during peak time frames (e.g. Christmas) or due to inclement weather. Orders where expedited shipping was purchased will take precedence in the fulfillment queue. Orders where 'Fastest Shipping' or 'Extra Expedited Shipping' is purchased will go out the same business day if placed before 11:30 am EST on business day.
Some example fulfillment times in our warehouse:
- A free-shipping order that is placed after business hours on Monday EST will likely make it out of our warehouse the following day (Tuesday), picked up by the courier EOD. (A ‘fastest shipping’ order should definitely make it out that following day EOD.)
- A free-shipping order placed on a Friday at 9am EST would have a chance of going out that same day, but more likely would slip until the following business day (Monday) and go out EOD Monday. (A ‘fastest shipping’ or ‘extra expedited shipping’ order at 9am EST Friday should definitely make it out that same day EOD).
Our stated shipping estimates at checkout are just that– estimates– and not guarantees.
Why isn’t my tracking label populating?
Orders are typically processed by our warehouse within 1 business day. While shipping labels may be generated in the morning, couriers typically pick up and scan orders at the end of the day. Please allow 6-24 hours for tracking to update after the shipping label is generated.
For example, a late Friday afternoon order would likely have its shipping label generated midday on Monday with the package leaving our warehouse by the end of the day. You can expect tracking to populate late Monday or early Tuesday.
Can I change or cancel my order after it has been placed?
If you wish to change or cancel your order, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible so that we can catch it before our warehouse ships it out…
Given the urgency of these situations, please message us with as much of the following information as possible to save time as we attempt to intercept:
- Order Number
- Email address used to place the order if it’s different than the one you are corresponding from
- New items and/or shipping address and/or shipping method
Our warehouse is very punctual with shipments getting out the door, and the unfortunate downside is how short the window is for editing orders after they've been placed.
Products & Fit
How do I find my size?
We solemnly swear that inactivewear is for everyone, everywhere.
With that in mind, our shirts have a unisex sizing gradient.
- For men, fit is true to size: e.g., our shirts reflect your typical S/M/L/XL casual button down shirt size.
- For women, order one size down: e.g., if you typically wear a women’s M, order a size S Tombolo.
Exact sizing varies by style of garment. On each product page, you can find a sizing chart with exact garment measurements by size for your reference. There are also reviews on each product page that will give you more nuanced descriptions of sizing. You will also find a sizing filter on our main shop, which allows you to search for items based on your preferred size: click the size you’re seeking as well as the ‘available’ button to search by what’s in stock.
Do you do any discounts?
We don't do conventional sales/discounts. We try to price everything fairly to avoid a ‘boom and bust’ whirlwind of markups and markdowns.
The exception is our welcome discount where you can drop an email and get a welcome code for your first order for 8% (you can find this offer on our homepage).
We’ve also launched our new loyalty program where you can collect points for direct savings and other meaningful perks at checkout. You can find our loyalty program here.
How often do you release, restock, and retire new items?
We don’t believe in traditional seasonal collections– we’ve never been buttoned up enough for that! Instead, we release new things in smaller, more frequent drops which accelerate in the spring and summer (from April through August).
You can see our latest releases here. Many limited edition items are destined for a breezy retirement soon after they are released. You can find almost-gone items in our Last Restocks collection before they are retired completely and enter our Gone Fishing collection, never to return again...

Where are your stores located?
Our flagship store is located in our native NYC at 208 Mott St, and we have a summer-only shop in Montauk, NY that is open from late May through early September. We also have a small selection of stockists worldwide, such as Soho Beach House in Miami, Le Sirenuse Hotel’s boutique in Positano, Italy, and an experiential retail destination called Koibird in London. These each carry a curated selection of Tombolo styles.

What’s your approach to sustainability?
We approach sustainability from a place of humility, knowing that the most sustainable thing a clothing company can do is not exist in the first place. Our goal is to continuously strive to reduce our negative impact even if we know we’ll never achieve perfection.
One of our key areas of focus is the fabrics we select to make our garments. Our four most widely used fabrics are organic cotton terry cloth, Tencel™, linen and recycled polyester. You can read about why we selected each of these fabrics here, along with insights on their environmental impact. We also use recycled, recyclable, and/or biodegradable packaging materials whenever possible and they comprise the vast majority of our packaging.
Other areas of focus include managing our production calendar to build in time for shipment by boat instead of airplane (significantly less carbon-intensive) and careful inventory management via limited edition runs and preorders to minimize overstock.
To help offset our impact further, we have joined 1% for the Planet and support many inspiring environmental causes.
What charitable causes do you support?
Our designs may be lighthearted and carefree, but our commitment to meaningful causes - both humanitarian and environmental - is quite serious! We're members of 1% for the Planet, committed to donating at least 1% of our revenue to approved environmental causes. We've also made our own ‘$1 for the People’ pledge to donate $1+ of every order to causes that help humanity. Take a look at our charitable initiatives.
How do you collaborate with artists?
What is Tombolo without art? A terrifying thought. Artist collaborations have been a cornerstone of our business since day one. We see our shirts as canvases for creative expression and nothing brings us more joy than passing the proverbial paintbrush to an artist we admire. You can find some of our recent collaborations here.
We have also launched an Artist Residency program. It’s an annual initiative where we select an artist-in-residence; the residency culminates in two of their works transformed into shirts and a solo exhibition hosted by Tombolo with zero commission taken.
I need limited editions!
Many of our shirts are limited edition with individually numbered labels. These often come and go quickly. Your best bet for earliest access is signing up for our email newsletter. How do I find out if a stocked out item is coming back?
If an item is marked as the last restock, or gone fishing, it’s not coming back, alas. There may still be inventory in one of our shops, but it’s unlikely, and the possibility dwindles over time… If it’s not tagged as last restock or gone fishing, there’s a chance we’ll see it again someday… feel free to sign up for the restock notification on the product page and reach out to customer service (firstname.lastname@example.org) to ask about a restock for a specific style.
