Introducing the winner of Tombolo’s third-annual Artist Residency! From over 600 applicants, we’ve chosen New Orleans-based painter, Mary Ball.
Says Mary about her work: ‘My process is entirely subconscious and unplanned. I turn abstract, expressive marks into something tangible. Similar to a folktale or mythology, these imaginary scenes help me process emotions and make sense of my current reality.’
We are so excited to work with Mary and apply the ethereal elements of her paintings to our garments. And we can’t wait to host an exhibition of her work after the Residency concludes… stay tuned.

We will turn two of your works into Tombolo shirts.
- May to November Residency, culminating in a NYC solo show where we take 0% commission.
- A $3500 stipend for materials & other expenses.
- Royalties from each shirt sold.

Jiannan Wu
Meet Jiannan Wu, winner of Tombolo's second annual Artist Residency Program (2023). Chosen from nearly 350 applicants, Jiannan collaborated with Tombolo on two shirts. Tombolo hosted his solo exhibition at the Tombolo NYC Flagship Store in February of 2024.
Alexis Zambrano
Meet Alexis Zambrano, winner of Tombolo's inaugural Artist Residency Program (2022). Chosen from nearly 200 applicants, Zambrano collaborated with Tombolo on two shirts; his Residency culminated in a November 2022 exhibition in the Tombolo Flagship Store at 208 Mott St., NYC.
