ABOUT JULIAN MACMILLAN

Julian MacMillan (b. 1992) lives and works in New York. Working across painting, printmaking and sculpture he creates work that resembles abstract portraits, anthropomorphic landscapes, and geometric studies. Through his multidisciplinary practice, which also spans carpentry and metalworking, MacMillan is able to combine and compress these genres, and make images that are both sensitive and other-worldly. Born and raised in Washington DC, MacMillan studied art at Dartmouth College prior to receiving his MFA in painting at Boston University. Recent exhibitions include Left Tower at Atlantic Mills (Providence, RI), Do It Again at East Manning Projects (Providence, RI), The View From Mars at Gallery 263 (Cambridge, MA) and Tell The Devil I'm Coming As Fast As I Can at Outlet Manhattan, New York, NY.

    Birdbath is fabulous! Did you

"Birdbath is fabulous! Did you think this was just a guys cabana shirt? Oh, then you’re silly as a goose, because chicks dig it too. And look fabulous in it. The design is so fun, you can just imagine the speed, splash, and bubbles of that loony dive! And the hand stitched details are worth squawking about."

    The embroidery and design are

"The embroidery and design are excellent as expected. I always wear a small and had to switch to the medium because it was too high in the armpits. I received a medium and the fit is still not the same as the other shirts that I have. But, the design is too beautiful. I’ll make it work somehow."

    very impressive shirt. excellent quality

"very impressive shirt. excellent quality and feel. the art work is very thick raised an 8th to 3/16th above the surface, and design is striking even in lower light, its a hit at the local tiki bar."

    Looks amazing AND gets compliments.

"Looks amazing AND gets compliments. What would be the point if it didn’t get compliments, right?"

    As a child, an unexpected

"As a child, an unexpected layover in Bangor Airport (snowstorm, flight to Cancún, New Year’s Eve ahead), left me with two images I have never shaken: a Concorde stranded in the snow like a narwhal beached and still, its horn pointing at nothing, and somewhere along the terminal, photographs of a loon. Those eyes, red as embers, stopped me cold. I have carried the loon with me ever since. That mantle of dots and flowing lines that seems designed by someone who chose abstract art over the laws of nature. And above all, its call, that lament drifting over still water that, once heard, never quite leaves you. When I found Julian MacMillan’s Birdbath, I understood immediately that someone else had seen what I see. This is not an illustration of the bird; it is its essence, distilled into ink and fabric. The lines flow like currents beneath the surface, the white dots pulse like light caught in dark plumage, and somewhere, quiet and deliberate, a flash of red: the eye. Always the eye. I ordered one without a moment’s hesitation. Some things simply close a circle."
